Snakebite outcomes are shaped not only by clinical response, but also by the social, cultural, and economic realities of affected communities. This webinar focuses on the lived experiences of rural, agrarian, and underserved communities where snakebite risk is often highest and timely access to care is most difficult. Participants will explore how cost, distance, fear, misinformation, trust in health systems, traditional care pathways, and household decision-making can influence whether and when a person seeks medical treatment. The webinar will help participants better understand the people and communities affected by snakebite, and why solutions must be grounded in local realities, community trust, and accessible pathways to care.

Solutions entered into the prize should be centred and informed by the end users, from people bitten by snakes to healthcare workers, to meaningfully contribute towards improving patient outcomes. To ensure lasting impact, solutions must be culturally resonant and demonstrate a credible path toward long-term sustainability. This session covers the complexities of accessing care for snakebites in Cambodia and supports entrants to consider the wide range of areas they must consider to develop strong solutions.

Featured speakers:

  • Mark Dainty (Director & Founder): Founded the program in 2023 in Siem Reap, Cambodia. As someone who has personally been affected by a snakebite, his goal is to provide education, prevention tools, and emergency response training to high-risk agrarian communities

  • Maria Chiara Parolin (Project Manager): She works closely with remote, underserved communities to address the barriers that delay effective care, such as high treatment costs, geographical distance, and fear.
